Generative AI Google Ads

Google’s Gemini Adds AI-Powered Conversational Experience in Google Ads.

Friday 05th January 2024

Google has announced the integration of Gemini, its most advanced multimodal large language model, into the Google Ads platform. This groundbreaking update is poised to transform how advertisers create and scale Search ad campaigns.

Gemini brings a conversational experience to Google Ads, offering a chat-based tool that streamlines the campaign creation process. By simply providing a website URL, advertisers can now use this tool to generate relevant ad content, including assets and keywords, for their Search campaigns. Notably, Gemini uses generative AI to suggest images, drawing from the advertiser’s website to ensure relevance and alignment with the campaign’s theme. Google has taken a transparent approach by ensuring all AI-generated images are clearly identified as such.

Advertisers retain full control over their campaigns, with the ability to approve all images and text before they go live. This feature is critical in maintaining the authenticity and brand alignment of the advertising content.

Recently, Google has expanded beta access to this conversational experience, making it available to all English language advertisers in the U.S. and U.K., with plans to roll out globally in the coming weeks. This expansion is a step towards making advanced AI tools accessible to a broader audience, and Google has announced plans to introduce this feature in additional languages in the upcoming months.

Shashi Thakur, Google’s VP and GM of Google Ads, has expressed enthusiasm about the new feature. “We observed that it helps build higher quality Search campaigns with less effort,” Thakur noted in a blog post. The conversational experience is designed to combine the expertise of advertisers with the power of Google AI, leading to more optimised and effective Search campaigns.

This update is part of Google’s broader push to integrate AI across its products. Recently, the company introduced “Product Studio” in the U.S., a suite of generative AI product imagery tools for advertisers. These tools allow for the creation of new product imagery using text-to-image AI capabilities and provide options to enhance low-quality images or remove distracting backgrounds.

As the consumer Search experience evolves, Google recognises the power of generative AI in empowering advertisers. From streamlining campaign creation to increasing ad effectiveness, AI plays a pivotal role. The company's commitment to AI-powered ads was evident last year, and this latest update underscores their ongoing progress.

Google remains dedicated to a responsible approach to AI, adhering to AI principles established in 2018. As AI continues to advance rapidly, the company is committed to exploring its potential in a way that unlocks value for consumers and advertisers alike, while maintaining ethical standards.
